If you are thinking about creating a website, one of the first things to consider is the domain name that you will pick. Transferring your website to a new domain name is a long and difficult process,  so it is important to pick the right name straight away. You have likely already considered a .com domain name, but did you know there are many other options to pick from nowadays, too?

While options like .com and .net are popular and instantly recognizable, it is also much harder to find a good domain name with these extensions. After all, they have been around for over three decades, and most “good” domain names have already been snagged by someone else. If you want to register a .com with your own name or business name, you may even discover that it is already taken, leaving you with a name that would have been your second (or last) choice.

Thankfully, there are new options out there! As of 2012, so-called new gTLDs have entered the market (with TLD meaning top-level domain or domain extension). There are thousands of new gTLDs out there, which makes it easier to register the domain name of your choice. And, on top of that, they’re usually much cheaper than a .com name would be.

Sounds good? In this article, you can get to know some of the most popular options for new gTLDs and their prices*. Who knows, maybe the perfect fit for your website is there?

*Prices were measured on 25 September 2023, are valid only for one-year registrations, and are shown in euros. These prices do not apply to premium domains. Be aware that prices may be subject to change.

.xyz is one of the most popular new gTLDs on the market. Its registry, Generation XYZ, refers to this extension as a “bold, fresh choice” for people who crave “creativity and versatility”. This domain name is a playful option that still makes for a short and memorable name. You can get a one-year .xyz registration for just €2,95, making it one of the cheapest options on the market.

.site is another short and accessible new gTLD that is most popular among small and medium-sized businesses. But, no matter what type of website you are thinking of creating, .site is a great option, not in the least because of its price: just €1,96 for the first year.

Do you want to start your own e-commerce business? In that case, you should look no further than .shop and .store. These new gTLDs immediately make it clear to your visitors that you are running a business while remaining very affordable. Prices for .shop start at €2,47 for a one-year registration, while .store is even a little cheaper at €1,77.

Many of the newest websites and online businesses are devoted to the area of technology. That’s why it makes sense that there is a special gTLD for tech companies that are looking for a catchy yet affordable domain name in 2022. Prices for a one-year registration of a .tech domain start at just €2,95.

Are you an artist, and do you want to make a website to showcase your portfolio or offer commissions? .art may be the right domain extension for you in order to share your creativity with the world. A one-year domain registration of .art costs just €4,11 at Openprovider.

.info is a great choice for informative websites that do not offer an e-commerce component. Are you starting a website about a topic that you are passionate about? Or are you offering information about a particular service? .info is a great option for either of those cases. You can get a one-year registration for just €5,10.
