What is a zone transfer?

Zone transfer is a critical process in domain management and DNS administration, allowing DNS information to be replicated across multiple servers for consistency and reliability. This synchronization ensures that changes made to the DNS zone on one server are propagated to all others, enhancing the availability and performance of domain names by distributing the workload among servers. This redundancy also serves as a safeguard against server failures or network outages, ensuring that domain names remain accessible to users at all times.

There are two main types of zone transfer: full zone transfer and incremental zone transfer. Full zone transfer replicates the entire DNS zone file to secondary servers, while incremental zone transfer only transfers changes made since the last transfer, improving efficiency.
