Google Registry has announced the launch of eight new TLDs to their domain portfolio: .foo, .zip, .mov, .nexus, .dad, .phd, .prof and .esq. Short, zippy and brand new, these extensions serve a variety of markets and would be great additions to diversify any portfolio. The Sunrise Phase of these TLDs started on April 2nd, 2023.

A quick look into each TLD

.foo is a suitable, tongue-in-cheek domain extension for developers. In the world of software development, “foo” is an intentionally meaningless word that developers use as a placeholder.

.zip is a great domain to imbue your website with a sense of speediness. To zip means to move somewhere at a high speed.

.mov is a great choice for websites that host movies or moving pictures.

The word “nexus” refers to a focal point or a series of connections, making .nexus a great choice for websites that focus on gathering links or creating connections.

After the launch of .mom, .baby, and .kids, .dad is now here to join the family. It is a great choice for parenting blogs and other websites centered around fatherhood.

.phd is for anyone with a doctorate. Use this domain to show off your accomplishments and share your research with people.

.prof is a good choice for professors and teachers – from showing off your resume and research online to posting content for your students.

The word “esq” is an abbreviation of “esquire”. This title is used by attorneys in the United States, but it is also a historic aristocratic title in the United Kingdom, ranking above “gentleman”, but directly below “knight”. Regardless of your profession or title, a .esq domain is always a standout choice.

Registration requirements

Anyone will be able to register these eight new Google TLDs. Domains will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Domain names can be between 1 and 63 characters in length. You will be able to register these domains for a period between 1 and 10 years. We expect internationalized domain registrations (written in another alphabet than the Latin script) to be permitted.

As is the case for other extensions from Google Registry, using a valid SSL certificate is a requirement for using these domains. In case there is no valid SSL certificate, the domain will be unable to load.
