What is a Wildcard SSL Certificate?

A wildcard SSL certificate is an SSL certificate that covers all of the subdomains under the main domain name that you order the certificate for. Many larger businesses and organizations use subdomains for their online environment like hosting their internal control panel, careers website, or customer support environment. Wildcard certificates make it easier for administrators of websites like these to protect their full infrastructure under one SSL certificate, rather than ordering a separate certificate for each subdomain. Wildcard certificates are more expensive than single-domain certificates.

If Openprovider would order a wildcard certificate, support.openprovider.eu would be considered a sub-domain that would be covered under this certificate.
