Domain backorder
What is a domain backorder?
A domain backorder is a service offered by some domain registrars that allows you to “reserve” a domain name that is already registered by someone else. The registrar will monitor the domain name for you, and if it ever expires, they attempt to grab it before anyone else can and register it in your name. Domain backorders are not always successful, as there may be multiple backorders on one domain, or the domain owner may renew the domain at the last minute.
Example: Imagine if you wanted to register openprovider.com, even though it is currently registered. You can place a backorder for this domain with another domain registrar. They will monitor whether the domain becomes available and try to register it for you as soon as it expires.
