Have you ever been curious to meet the people behind the domains? In this series of blog posts, we are introducing you to various members of our global, fully remote team.
This week, we are introducing you to Shaznan (25), who works as a front-end developer in our marketing team.
Tell us something about yourself!
My name is Shaznan and I’m from Colombo, Sri Lanka. I work as a front-end developer and webmaster for the company’s public site. In my free time, I like to keep myself fit by going for a walk or a jog, and I go to the gym whenever it’s possible. I love to learn something new every day to grow as a person.
What does an average day in your role look like?
My role at Openprovider is mostly focused on web page development and site maintenance, using tools such as Next.js for front-end development and React for WordPress block development.
At the end of every workday, I make a list of all tasks that are up next. I also take note of my incomplete tasks, that I will need to continue with during the next working day. I start off each working day with a hot cup of tea, going through the list of tasks I made on the previous day. I prioritize my tasks based on their importance and how urgently they need to be delivered.
During my workday, I play some Lofi music in the background which helps me concentrate and be more productive. I also follow the Pomodoro technique whenever it’s possible. When I select a task to work on, I set a timer and work continuously for 25 minutes, after which I take a five-minute break to walk around my house and keep my mind away from work-related thoughts. After this, I get back to work again, repeating this cycle until my task is done.
Which achievement (of yourself, your team, or the company) are you most proud of?
What I am most proud of is winning an AI competition held by the management team of Openprovider. For this competition, I worked on two project concepts involving the use of AI in the domain registration process.
The first project was about upgrading our domain registration process by introducing AI-powered TLD suggestions that were recommended to users based on their searches. This involved prompts to ChatGPT, GraphQL requests for individual domain pages, and API calls for domain prices.
The second project was about AI-powered domain name suggestions. To address customers leaving due to unavailable domains, I created an AI-driven domain suggestions tool using OpenAI. After a WHOIS lookup, the tool uses AI to suggest alternative domain names that are still free to register. As suggestions are filtered for availability, this saves users time and enhances their experience.
What are your favorite things about working remotely? And is there something you like less about it?
Working remotely at Openprovider has given me the flexibility to work from my own time zone. I have also noticed an increase in my productivity – as I work alone in my room, there are no disturbances, and this helps a lot to focus on my tasks. I also have the opportunity to work with people from different regions and cultures around the globe and get inspired by them.
However, my favorite perk of them all is that I don’t have to worry about my outfit every day before work and that there are no travel times or expenses involved to get to the office. That means I can just wake up, boot my PC, and get started with work!
What do you like the most about working at Openprovider?
What I like the most about Openprovider is the working culture. People at Openprovider are really friendly and are ready to help at all times, and we continuously support each other when facing issues and to help our overall growth. The HR department at Openprovider has been putting in a lot of effort to make our company culture great, such as encouraging donut calls to have casual fun conversations.
On top of that, I get to meet my colleagues from Sri Lanka every quarter for a meet-up, which is completely sponsored by Openprovider. This helps me to get to know my colleagues even better and we always have a really good time during these meetups.
