Some important changes are on the way for .dk.
The ccTLD of Denmark, Punktum dk administers the .dk extension and recently announced that it is transitioning to a new administration model – phasing out registrant management and moving all new registrations to registrar management as of 1 July 2026.
In a recent communication, Punktum dk explained the context behind the decision:
“For Punktum dk, this is a big leap that has been underway for a long time and follows the development that was started back in 2017, when we opened up the possibility for registrars to enter into agreements on behalf of us as domain administrators and continued with the introduction of registrar management in 2021.”
If you manage .dk domains for clients, this blog breaks down what’s changing, what it means for your operations, and whether you need to take any action.
What the .dk registry is changing – and why it matters for your portfolio
Punktum dk is transitioning to a new administration model. The change follows a process that Punktum dk began in 2017, when registrars were first able to enter into agreements on behalf of the registry.
The core change: registrant management is being phased out. As of 1 July 2026, all new .dk domain names can only be registered under the registrar management model. The transition period for existing registrant-managed .dk domains runs until 30 June 2028, during which time those registrants will need to choose a registrar to handle their domain going forward.
There is also a registration term change worth noting: as of 1 July 2026, .dk domains can only be registered and renewed for one year at a time.
This is a deliberate, planned transition. The registry has been moving in this direction for years, and July 2026 marks the point where the new model becomes the only path for new registrations.
Which resellers need to act – and which don’t
For most resellers already operating under the registrar management model – which covers the majority of domain resellers, web hosters, and MSPs working with an accredited registrar – the changes require no immediate action on new registrations. The registrar management model they already use remains fully intact.
Where action may be needed is for any clients whose .dk domains are currently under registrant management. Those registrants will need to migrate to a registrar before 30 June 2028. If you manage .dk domains on behalf of clients, now is a good time to check whether any of those domains sit in the registrant management model.
The updated registrar contract from Punktum dk was issued on 1 April 2026, with the new terms coming into force as of 1 July 2026. If you operate as an accredited registrar, reviewing that contract is the practical first step.

The four things worth checking across your .dk portfolio now
A change at registry level is a useful prompt to review the following areas:
- Registration model status. Confirm which of your clients’ .dk domains are registrant-managed and which are already under registrar management. Any still on the old model will need to transition before mid-2028.
- Renewal terms. As of July 2026, .dk domains renew annually only. If you have any multi-year .dk renewals in your current workflow or billing setup, those configurations need updating.
- Client communications. Punktum dk is communicating this change directly to registrants. If any of your clients come to you with questions, having a clear explanation ready avoids unnecessary concern.
- Registrar contract. If you operate directly as an accredited registrar for .dk, Punktum dk has outlined the contract changes in their registrar announcement – review the updated terms and confirm your setup meets the new requirements as of 1 July 2026.
Why centralized infrastructure makes registry changes easier to manage
Registry changes like this are a practical reminder of why centralized domain infrastructure matters. When your full portfolio sits on one platform – with clear visibility into registration model, renewal dates, and registrant data – changes at registry level are manageable. When it’s spread across multiple systems, each registry update becomes a manual audit.
For resellers managing .dk domains through Openprovider, the registrar management model is already in place. Openprovider’s platform gives you full lifecycle visibility across your portfolio, automated renewals, and a single point of control for domains, DNS, SSL, email, and security.
Openprovider Membership takes it further – giving you access to .dk domain registrations, renewals, and transfers at wholesale rates, alongside 2,000 other TLDs, all on one platform. If you’re managing .dk domains for clients and want predictable pricing with none of the operational overhead of fragmented vendors, Openprovider has you covered.
The deadline is manageable – if you act on the right things now
The .dk registry changes are well-signalled and the 2028 deadline gives you time to plan. For resellers already working under the registrar model, the transition is largely structural and handled at the registrar level. The main task is identifying any registrant-managed domains in your portfolio and planning their migration ahead of the deadline. If you have questions about your .dk domains on Openprovider, our support team is available 24/7.
