How to get your customers to choose niche TLDs

When your customers ask for a domain name, chances are they default to .com. But here’s the catch: after more than 40 years, there aren’t many .coms left!

Four decades later and the .com namespace is overcrowded, and great names are often taken or overpriced. Niche TLDs provide a great alternative – and as a reseller, you’re in the perfect position to help your customers see their value.

So, how do you present niche TLDs as smart, credible alternatives to traditional extensions?

Let’s break it down.

Addressing concerns about trust and spam

One of the most common concerns customers have is whether niche TLDs are “spammy.” It’s a valid question, as some TLDs have unfortunately developed a reputation for abuse. But the truth is: it depends on the TLD.

Many niche TLDs have strong reputations and clear use cases. For example:

  • .art is trusted by artists, galleries, and cultural institutions around the world – even by the Louvre!
  • .asia is a well-managed TLD backed by the DotAsia Organisation, with real regional relevance.
  • .law was created specifically for legal professionals, and all registrants must be able to show a strong connection to the legal industry.
  • All TLDs from Google Registry, such as .app and .dev, require a valid SSL certificate for the website to resolve, keeping the namespace safe.

The key is to recommend relevant, well-governed TLDs with strong registry policies. Avoid the ones with high reported abuse, and your customers won’t have to worry.

What about memorability?

In the attention economy, businesses rarely get more than one chance to make people remember their domain name. It’s why one-word.coms will always be the gold standard of domain names. However, with niche TLDs going mainstream, there are significant first-mover advantages available.

Just like .coms, the brandability of a niche TLD domain boils down to one question: “Will people remember it?”

Yes – if the domain makes sense.

A TLD like .lawyer, .cafe, or .photography adds context that can actually boost memorability, especially when paired with a good domain name. Compare these:

  • smithlawyer.com
  • smith.lawyer

Which one is cleaner and easier to remember?

The right niche TLD can do double duty: reinforce the brand and make the domain more descriptive.

Stand out from the .com crowd

Here’s the opportunity: the best .com names are long gone (or sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars on the aftermarket)

But your customers can still get clean, short, relevant, and affordable names with a niche TLD. Unlike generic names on legacy extensions, a niche TLD can instantly communicate what the business does, where it’s based, or who it serves. They’re a great choice for creatives, niche industries, and startups who want something unique and brandable.

As a domain reseller, you are in a unique position to help your customers make smarter choices that support their brand, without sacrificing credibility.
