meet team openprovider: jakub

Have you ever been curious to meet the people behind the domains? In this series of blog posts, we are introducing you to various members of our global, fully remote team.

This week, we are introducing you to Jakub (33), who works as a Senior Backend Software Engineer in our Domains & DNS Team!

Tell us something about yourself!

My name is Jakub and I am a Senior Backend Engineer. I make sure that all invisible (but very important) processes of our system work properly. I live with my wife and our cat in Jelenia Góra, a medium-sized city in the mountainous southwest of Poland.

In my free time, I like to read biographical, psychological, business, and marketing books. I read over 40 books a year! On top of that, I play tennis and squash. I am generally interested in sports (such as football, tennis, and basketball), so I am always ready to talk about current sports news.

What does an average day in your role look like?

My team members work in different time zones, so I start the day by checking my email, JIRA, and Slack. I believe it is very important to be in constant and efficient contact with yourself. This helps you be effective and help others achieve their goals.

Every day (except for our meeting-free Thursdays!) I have a short meeting with my team to synchronize the status of our work. This is also a very pleasant moment of the day, as every day we build our relationships and get to know each other better and better on a personal note.

In the remaining time, I focus on solving problems and creating new solutions. My role also involves a lot of research, as well as learning the system code and reading documentation. This is what I really love about my job. Progress gives me great satisfaction.

Which achievement (of yourself, your team, or the company) are you most proud of?

My team deals with a wide variety of responsibilities, such as integrating with registries, reacting to changes they make, and quickly fixing various errors. Because of this, it is very difficult to choose one feat that could be our greatest success.

I do always feel proud when someone from my team learns about another part of the system and their knowledge increases. This means we are becoming stronger and more flexible as a team.

Personally, I am very proud of the improvements I have introduced in the domain abuse reporting automation system. This saves our support team a lot of time every day.

What are your favorite things about working remotely? And is there something you like less about it?

I absolutely love remote work and I am a huge fan of it! I’ve been working this way since I graduated from college and I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I love saving time on commuting to work, I don’t have to leave the house when the weather is bad, and I can better fit work into my day.

Of course, remote work is not for everyone. It is a privilege but at the same time a huge challenge. You need to have a quiet place to work to isolate yourself from ambient noise, and you must also be highly organized and motivated for it to work.

What do you like the most about working at Openprovider?

Openprovider is a mix of people from different cultures, with different skills and interests. It is very interesting to meet my colleagues and spend time with them.

From my first day, everyone here has been very helpful and patient, and they all have a great attitude. I didn’t expect that my colleagues would become close and important to me so quickly.

The Openprovider team and the advantages of remote work are what make working at Openprovider one of the best decisions in my life.
