Internationalized Domain Names or IDNs are those domain names that contain characters other than the Latin alphabet (A-Z) or digits. From the 21st of November 2018, all registration orders of IDNs within the CentralNic platform will require explicit definition of the IDN script used. You can find a list of these further down this article.
This change is being made to address an edge case in the registration of internationalised domaisn. Such domains may be syntactically valid in two or more different IDN tables, but may not be valid for registration in one of those tables due to language-specific rules about variants. In such cases, it is necessary to know which table the domain should be associated with at the point of registration.
More IDN news: from the 12th of November 2018, the Afilias-run extensions .me, .onl and .rich will support all languages that Afilias already supports for .info and other extensions. This includes most European languages, as well as Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and more.
