How to transfer your domain(s) to another registrar

The process itself is quite easy, so in general, you don’t have to worry about it. In this article, we are reviewing the steps of a domain transfer, as well as the situations in which you may not be allowed to transfer a domain to another registrar.

How to transfer your domains to a new registrar

In order to start the transfer process, you will need to comply with two requirements:

• You are the official registrant or the administrative contact for the domain name you want to transfer.
• You have access to any needed data from your current registrar regarding the transfer process.
• Your contact information is up to date.

The gaining registrar, which the one you will be moving your domains to, will then send a standardized authorization form to confirm you agree with the transfer. Once you provide your authorization, the transfer process request starts. Without this authorization, the transfer will not proceed.

After this step, you can expect a message from your current registrar, asking you to confirm the transfer. This step ensures your domain names will be protected from an unauthorized transfer. Make sure you authorize both registrars, even if it may seem like a duplicate action. Once you complete the confirmation on both sides, the gaining registrar will complete the transfer. This process takes around 5 working days.

When transfers are not possible

There are several situations in which you won’t be able to start the transfer process:

• Your new registrar may refuse a transfer request if you’ve registered it less than 60 days before.
• It is also not possible to trasnfer a domain if you are not the registrant or administrative contact for the domain name.
• A domain name may also besubject to a lock that doesn’t allow you to change registrars. This rule exists to help increase the protection against unauthorized transfers. You can also opt-out of this lock.
• You won’t be able to transfer a domain name to a different registrar if you’ve made changes to the registrant name, email address, or organization. If this is the case, you should consider making these changes after transferring your domain name.
• If you have recently transferred your domain, most probably you won’t be able to transfer it again until 60 days have passed.
